History
The Dai Kan-Wa jiten was first published in April 1955. Its compilation and production began in 1925 when the chief of Taishukan, Ippei Suzuki, requested Morohashi to edit a new kanji dictionary of a much larger scale than existing ones.
In order to print the dictionary, type for most of the 50,000 characters had to be created, since none existed.
The first volume was produced in 1943, but the printing plates were lost when Taishukan's main offices were destroyed by bombing during the Pacific War. After the war, due to a shortage of skilled craftsmen, Suzuki persuaded Mokichi Ishii to make the necessary fonts.
